The Sinfonia Chorale marked its 40th Anniversary with a major concert in the impressive and atmospheric surroundings of Southwell Minster. The St John Passion by J S Bach was performed as part of the Minster's Holy Week programme. This great dramatic work was given authentic treatment with small choral forces, period instrumental ensemble and in its original language. Essential as it was for the narrative and commentary to be easily followed, English surtitles were shown, and a full translation appeared in the programme. Richard Roddis, the choir's director, fulfilled a dual capacity, directing parts of the work as well as singing the key role of the Evangelist - a part he has sung many times before, to wide critical acclaim. Much of the work was undirected, allowing it to speak both more directly and more intimately. The one-to-a-part period ensemble was led by Nicolette Moonen - an international baroque specialist - and a balanced team of fine soloists completed the body of performers for this memorable event.
Peter Palmer wrote, in the Nottingham Evening Post:
In its 40th anniversary season, the Sinfonia Chorale reaffirmed its position as the region's premier chamber choir. One could never hope to find more devoted music-making than this.
