Sunday 5 November 2006 The programme will include: Pizzetti........Messa di Requiem The main work of this concert was the Messa di Requiem by Ildebrando Pizzetti. Although hardly known in this country, Pizzetti was a very significant figure in Italian musical life in the early part of the 20th century. The Requiem (1923) is to Italian choral music what Vaughan Williams' Mass in G minor is to its English counterpart and it recalls Durufle's setting in its adherence to ancient plainsong. Written for unaccompanied choir, it is a sumptuous work, which draws on the richness of Palestrina-like counterpoint, often in 8 parts, and pays homage also to the Venetian tradition, with three choirs deployed in the Sanctus. This was a rare opportunity to hear this unjustly neglected work. Back to Past GloriesBack to Home Page |
