Monteverdi's Vespers of the Blessed Virgin (1610) is to be performed appropriately on the Saturday before the Feast of the Annunciation - Lady Day. Based on plainchant, this benchmark work has Monteverdi nevertheless pioneering the new 'concerto' style, requiring a virtuoso approach from both singers and instrumentalists. It is a compositional tour-de-force, a lavish showpiece, the first of the new Baroque era, and a piece to match the magnificence of the Minster, in this the 400th anniversary of its composition
