Magnificat
Saturday 3 November 2007 8.00 pm St Barnabas Cathedral, Nottingham
directed by Richard Roddis
The figure of Mary has been a great icon in Christian art over many centuries, and her Song 'Magnificat' has provided many composers with a source of great inspiration. Our programme covers a diversity of settings:

A joyful Magnificat attributed to Dietrich Buxtehude, with recorders and organ
Rachmaninov's Slavonic Magnificat from the Vespers
Gerald Finzi - the concert Magnificat commissioned by choirs in the USA
and
A Girl for the Blue - Michael Ffinch's poem 'Annunciation', music by Patrick Larley
Interspersed will be settings of other texts associated with Mary:
Ave Marias by Robert Parsons and Anton Bruckner
Plainsong Hymn: Ave maris stella
Hans Leo Hassler's Annunciation motet: Dixit Maria ad angelum
Benjamin Britten's Hymn to the Virgin
