Summer Concert
St Martin's Church, Sherwood, Nottingham
Saturday 7 June at 7.30 p.m.
directed by Richard Roddis
The programmes will include * In Windsor Forest by Ralph Vaughan Williams * Zigeunerlieder (Gipsy Songs) by Brahms * Mátra Pictures by Zoltán Kodály * Cloudburst by Eric Whitacre, and * arrangements of English folksongs.
Vaughan Williams adapted his cantata In Windsor Forest from his opera 'Sir John in Love'. While the opera is seldom heard, the cantata is rightly popular with singers and audience alike.
Brahms wrote his Gipsy Songs late in his career. He had had a lifelong fascination with Hungarian Gipsy music, and these pieces combine that with the forces and sound of his popular 'Liebeslieder Waltzes'.
Continuing the Hungarian theme, Kodály was a great collector of his country's folk songs, and he put together this attractive set for unaccompanied choir.
Tempting fate, we repeated Eric Whitacre's exciting Cloudburst with which we greeted last year's soaking summer.
